7 Outdated Dating Rules that Should Come Back

Everyone always talks about the "rules" of dating. But with the rising popularity of online dating apps, can you still follow these rules? Many of the so-called dating faux-pas have become outdated because of changes in how we communicate and the evolution of traditional gender roles. However, here are seven old-fashioned dating tips that you should follow today.

Outdated Dating Rules that Should Come Back

1. Writing a cute love letter

A handwritten love letter is never been outdated. Facebook posts, lovable Tweets and Instagram dedication posts are adorable, and yes, they will let everyone know how you feel about your partner. However, a simple and cute love note goes above and beyond. This is something special that most people won't think to do; its heartfelt sentiments will really show your partner how much you cherish them.

2. Practicing chivalry

Chivalry doesn't have to be dead. Let's all get committed to being more chivalrous and mannerly while dating. Opening the door for each other, texting after the date to make sure the other person reached home safely, maintaining courteous behavior over the course of your relationship -- these types of small gestures will set you apart from the masses. Before, it was only the man who would be chivalrous, but there's no reason the woman can't be as well! Chivalry will make a good first impression and make your date feel special and wooed.

3. Offering to pay the bill

In today's dating culture, the first impression is very important. Since there are no official rules on who should pay for dinner, how you approach the situation will set the tone for the relationship. If you are in a committed relationship and have a deal about splitting the bill, it's still nice to offer to pay for the entire thing. If this is your first or second date, the person asked for the date should offer to pay. Of course, some girls prefer guys to pay the bill, but times have changed quite a bit. If you think she'll be offended by you paying fully, ask her how she would like to handle it. Let her know that you had a great time and are willing to pay, but only if she's comfortable with that.

4. Taking the relationship slow

Though we are less inclined to move slowly in this fast-paced era, taking a relationship slow is always a good idea.

Spend time getting to know one another:

  • Go on dates instead of hanging out at each other's places
  • Speak to one another on the phone rather than via text messages
  • Don't jump into the heavy topics right away

Earlier, people went on dates and did not have constant access to their phones or computers, which arguably heightened the romance. You didn't learn everything through messaging before the first date even happened. Though it is impossible to leave your phone out of the relationship today, taking it slow is still a manageable feat.

5. Calling instead of texting

There's something special about bonding over the phone rather than over text. With texts, you have a better chance of avoiding awkward lulls in conversation, and you can take your time to write something witty. But texting isn't quite the same as a full-on conversation.

Calling offers you a chance to really connect with the person before you meet your partner. A sexy voice and good conversation can be a turn-on. A good modern version of this rule is to text first and find out someone available to talk. That shows you have respect for the person's schedule, and you'll avoid a frustrating game of phone tag.

6. Introducing your date to your family

Today, it's totally normal for parents to have no idea whom their child is dating, but that wasn't the case back in the day. Potential partners were introduced to immediate family members early on. This was helpful in seeing how dates behaved around respected members of the family and what family members thought of the date. It created an overall sense of security and safety for everyone involved.

7. Buying a thoughtful gift

There is no harm in brightening someone's day with a little something special. Giving the right gifts never gets old, because this is a simple gesture of appreciation towards your partner which tells how much you care for and understand them. Of course, not all dating rules from the past will work for modern dating. But by integrating some of these dating tips, you can grow a stronger and personal connection in your relationship.
