Stay Sober: First Date Ideas That Don't Involve Alcohol

How many times have you asked someone out on a first date that involved booze? First dates are intimidating, and alcohol works well to calm nerves. Bars are a fun and loud alternative to dinner for those with social anxiety. It's easier to get to know someone when intoxicated, but it's also harder to stay composed and refrain from saying things you shouldn't share on a first date.

However, relying on drinks turns problematic when your date doesn't drink. Whether they recently went sober or are on a health cleanse, there's plenty options other than grabbing cocktails. Alcohol-free outings allow you to do more and have fun while seeing the other person's authentic self. Dates at a bar usually involve a lot of sitting and talking which can be even worse on your nerves. Alcohol also impairs your judgement and motor skills, so you don't make the best first impression.

"Activity-based dates are a wonderful icebreaker," says Susan Winter, a relationship expert and author. "By having an activity be the focal point of the interaction, there's less pressure on the 'question and answer' aspect of a date. The format shifts to fun and adventure."

Ignore the misconception that drinking equals fun. It's possible to have an amazing time without alcohol. Are you game? Try these 15 dry date ideas!

  1. Play a round of mini golf. Liven up the night with a little competition. Because mini golf is a family activity, most courses do not even allow alcohol on the premises.

  2. Team up for trivia night. Although these often occur at a bar, there's no rule that says you must drink. An added incentive to trivia events is that you can win a gift certificate to come back - and that's a great opportunity for a second date.

  3. Catch a comedy show. The jokes will take off the edge, so alchohol doesn't have to. If you feel brave, ask to sit close to the stage. Comedians love interacting with couples in the first couple of rows.

  4. Try a water sport. First date in summer? Try out some paddle boarding, surfing, tubing... maybe even a water park. You can show off your muscles while you're at it.

  5. Partake in paint night. Even if you're not artistic, paint nights are a great way to spend your first date. The worse you paint, the funnier it will be. Offer your completed work of art to your date as a memento.

  6. Plan a romantic picnic. Picnics can happen anywhere you want, so they're easily adapted to the situation. Whether park or beach, choose a background that matches your personalities. (And when planning the meal, don't forget to ask your date for food allergies!)

  7. Go retro with bowling. Think outside of the box (and into the lane) with this relaxed, vintage sport. Remember to wear you best socks for a good impression. Some bowling alleys even employ black lights, disco balls, and deejays on certain days for extra excitement.

  8. Hang out at a sporting event. Whether professional or college or high school, sporting events include concession stand food, rowdy fans, and constant entertainment.

  9. Visit an amusement park. Roller coasters and high thrill rides will pump you up. Adrenaline rushes are natural intoxication. They keep you in the moment and out of your head.

  10. Take a class - dancing, cooking, karate. There's endless options here. You can attempt something totally new or show off a hidden talent.

  11. Attend a street fair or food festival. Lots of edible goodies in one convenient location... It's a like a bar crawl but with delicious food instead!

  12. Enjoy a music festival. Indoor concerts usually occur in small clubs or dark bars, but festivals take place in large open spaces with big crowds and lots of energy.

  13. Tour a museum or art gallery. Find common ground with your date and search for a local museum or gallery that showcases those tastes. Take advantage of interactive displays or exhibitions.

  14. Engage your active side with a hike. Enjoy the fresh air with a little exploration. The scenic views will be a great backdrop to your conversation, and the exercise keeps your blood pumping and excitement high.

  15. Grab a cup of gourmet coffee. Replace your mixed drink with a cup of joe. Coffee houses tend to be much quieter and more intimate than bars, so they provide the perfect atmosphere.

A dry date can work in your favor. If the other person has been going on an endless round of grabbing drinks with new people they've met through online dating apps, your creative new option will stand out in their mind. Put your personality into your planning, and it will be a memorable encounter. Don't be afraid to try something new, because you will be able to bond over experience.
