Rose Day marks the beginning of Valentine's Week when you are supposed to gift roses to your significant other. Roses are romantic and beautiful, unless they are dying and losing petals. Do you know what to look for when picking out roses?
1. Squeeze the rose where the petals meet the stem
Gently squeeze roses at their base, where the petals come together at the stem. If it feels loose, the roses are old. If it feels firm, the roses are fresh.
2. Inspect the roses for bruised or broken petals
Look for roses with well-formed, colourful petals. Examine the tips of the petals to make sure they aren't bruised or brown.
3. Keep them in water on the way home
If the roses are out of water, even for a few minutes, they'll suffer and won't stay fresh as long. Try to always keep them in water.
4. Keep the roses cool
Roses stay fresh for days if you keep them in a cool spot. That's why most florists keep their stock refrigerated. Avoid placing roses near sunny windows or in rooms that tend to be on the warmer side.
Happy Rose Day!
